2nd Annual YMF Technical Seminar - Transportation
September 20, 2007

The 2nd Annual YMF Technical Seminar was held on Sept. 20th from noon - 5pm at the Sheraton Downtown Orlando. This year the seminar's focus was on Transportation and we had a great turnout with over 35 attendees! A big thank you to our speakers: Dr. Siva Srinivasan (University of Florida), Matt Click, AICP (Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise), Loreen Choate, PE (FDOT), and Jack Finn, PE (HNTB). Also, a big thank you to our sponsors for supporting our efforts and giving us an opportunity to host such an event. Thank you to Cathy Polityka and her technical committee - without your help this conference would not have been a success!
 
YMF Membership Happy Hour
September 20, 2007

After the YMF Technical Seminar, everyone met at One Eyed Jacks downtown for our Membership Happy Hour. The mixer kicked off the new fiscal year and was a great opportunity to mingle with fellow members and for the YMF Board to recruit some new faces. We had a great turnout and are excited about all of our new members and officers!


 
Oktoberfest in Celebration
October 13, 2007
YMF members met in Celebration to celebrate the German tradition of Oktoberfest.  The social allowed members to mingle and enjoy drinks and live music.

 
GumDrop Bridge Activity for Outreach Love
October 20, 2007
Seven YMF volunteers taught approximately 25 Orlando youth about bridges.  The youth are in the Outreach Love program at the First United Methodist Church.  Outreach Love is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to being a positive influence in the lives of Downtown Orlando's youth.  YMF volunteers read a brief book on bridges to the youth and then helped them to build gumdrop truss bridges.  The book and activity were developed by ASCE member Loreen Choate, P.E.

 
5th Annual Community Service Event with Rebuilding Together at the ASCE Annual Civil Engineering Conference
November 4, 2007
On Sunday, November 4th, a large group of ASCE members from across the nation came together to make improvements to the Frontline Outreach Center on John Young Parkway. The Frontline Outreach Center is a non-profit facility in Orlando, Florida that serves children and families with pre-school programs, after-school programs, family education, and recreation. The work accomplished included buffer landscaping, building a trash dumpster enclosure, constructing a trench drain, striping the parking lot, and painting the gym floor.

Special Thanks to Michelle Everett for helping to coordinate and organize this national event. 
Also a big Thank You to Paul J Ford and Company and Horizon Engineering Group for putting together structural and site plans for the project. And of course, Thanks to all volunteers who spent the day working to improve our community!

 
Thanksgiving Food Drive and Happy Hour
November 15, 2007
YMF recently held their annual food drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. YMF members collected a total of 542 pounds of food and $410! The members brought the donations to an organized Happy Hour at O’Boys BBQ in Winter Park, and enjoyed their first drink for free, courtesy of YMF. Thanks to all who supported the food drive collection!


 
Toys for Tots Toy Drive and Collection Happy Hour

A big thanks to those who participated in this year’s Toys for Tots toy drive. We collected three (3) carloads of toys and $110 in cash donations. Special thanks go to VHB (Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc.) for their $500 donation. In addition YMF donated $100, totaling the amount collected to $710.
