Toys for Tots Toy Drive and Happy Hour
December 2006
On December 7th, about 30 ASCE YMF members gathered at Sportstown BIllards to collect unwrapped toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.  The donations overloaded cars and the turnout was a great success.  Members celebrated the holidays with a happy hour that included darts and pool.

Second Harvest Food Drive and Happy Hour
November 2006
During the month of November, YMF members collected cans and non-perishable food from a variety of local civil engineering firms to be delivered to the Central Florida Second Harvest Food Bank.  On the 16th, a grand total of 1560 lbs of food was donated to serve the needs of the Central Florida community.  YMF members met at O'Boys to collect cans and celebrate another successful effort.  A big thanks to everyone who helped make this year a success.

Discover!
November 4, 2006
Four ASCE YMF members participated in conjunction with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) in their annual Girl Scout Discover! event.  The day was filled wtih creative workships that allowed girls of all ages to use their imagination within the areas of science and engineering.  Women from various technical backgrounds volunteered to lead the hands-on workshops.

Bowling at Colonial Lanes
October 24, 2006
For our October social, about 15 YMF members met at Colonial lanes to bowl a few frames and mingle after work.  Although no turkeys or perfect 300 scores were achieved, YMF members were able to forget about the day's work and have some good natured fun.  Afterwards the group headed to dinner.  It was good to see so many new faces and we hope to see even more at our next event.

2006 ASCE Annual Civil Engineering Conference
October 19-21, 2006
This year YMF sent eight members to the ASCE Annual Conference for three days.  The group convened at the Westin River North for lectures and symposiums.  Beginning Saturday morning, joint students and younger member lectures were presented.  The afternoon YMF session consisted of a question and answer forum with a project manager panel in order to facilitate opinions and strategies on the trends and growth of the younger engineer's career.  On Sunday, four YMF members stayed in Chicago to participate in ASCE/Rebuilding Together 2006, a community service project in which approximately 30 ASCE members helped restore a Boys and Girls Club facility in one of the poorest suburbs in Chicago.  Our YMF members helped restore the art room, while other ASCE members worked in the music room, library and auditorium.  By the end of the day the center had been transformed into a suitable place for the community's children to learn and play in a safe and engaging environment.  In 2007 the conference will be hosted in Orlando.

A big thanks to our sponsors for affording us the opportunity to meet with YMF members from all over the country and exchange ideas.  Thank you to Comprehensive Engineering Services, DRMP, HNTB, MSCW and RS&H for your support.

YMF Officer Recruitment Happy Hour
September 14, 2006
To start off the new fiscal year, YMF organized a happy hour at the Loaded Hog in Downtown Orlando.  The mixer celebrated the success of the inaugural YMF Technical Seminar.  It was also a great opportunity for members to mingle and for the Board to recruit some new faces to the YMF Executive Board.  What a way to kick off the year!

YMF's First Annual Technical Seminar- Focusing on Water Resources
September 14, 2006
The ASCE YMF 1st Annual Technical Seminar was held at the Ivanhoe Plaza Hotel.  The half-day seminar focused on water resources, covering four major topics-- engineering design pitfalls, integrated water resources planning, geotechnical oversights, and groundwater modeling.  Approximately 38 members, from more than 11 different civil engineering firms, were in attendance.  Beginning with box lunches, the seminar ran rather smoothly.  Members were able to earn PDH credits while listening to lectures given by our speakers from PB Water (a division of Parsons, Brinckerhof Quade and Douglas, Inc.) , Professional Engineering Consultants, and HSW Engineering, Inc.  Thank you to our sponsors: HSW Engineering, Inc., MSCW, and Singhofen and Associates, Inc. for supporting us in this inaugural event.  A big thanks goes to Cathy Polityka, our YMF Technical Seminar Chair, Heather Patterson, Lindy Wolfe, and Sarah Greene for all their help in organizing and coordinating this event.

Gumdrop Bridge Outreach Activity
September 9, 2006
YMF visited Ms. Paradiz's ESOL 2nd grade class at Riverdale Elementary School to teach a structures lesson. In this educational outreach acitivity, YMF members helped the 22 students construct bridges, using gum drops and tootpicks.  Students learned the fundamentals of a strong truss, despite the challenge of sticky fingers.
