Engineer for a Day

April 17, 2009
ASCE East Central Branch YMF and FDOT hosted the 26th Annual Engineer for a Day activity. Juniors and Seniors from 6 Central Florida High Schools participated in this year’s event. The event was supported by a diverse group of consulting firms, universities and municipal government. We hope to see your firm participate next year! This year’s host organizations were:

• EAC Consulting

• Glatting Jackson Kercher Anglin

• HNTB

• Parsons Brinckerhoff

• RS&H

• Seminole County Public Works

• X-NTH

Program information was provided by the University of Central Florida, Florida Atlantic University, the University of Florida, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. The event featured guest presentations by Dr. Necati Catbas of the UCF Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering, Ms. Solange Dao of Dao Consulting, and Mr. Rafiq Chowdhury, president of the UCF ASCE student chapter.

An exciting highlight of the event was the mystery design competition where students constructed ridiculously complicated Rube Goldberg machines to perform the simple task of ringing a bell! The winning team incorporated a pulley, a couple of levers, and several inclined planes using items such as toy cars, foam pipe insulation, dominos, marbles, and paint stirs. The winning team took away free tickets to the movies for themselves and a guest. Additionally, the event rewards the authors of the top three registration essays for their efforts. The winners of this year’s essay competition were Mr. Zach Edwards, Mr. Moise Difeo, and Ms. Taylor Thompson. Congratulations to them and to all the students who participated!

The organizing committee would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to all those involved. A very special thank you is deserved by the Florida Department of Transportation for providing a consistent venue for this event year after year. The success of this activity is simply not possible without the broad base of support given to Engineer for a Day by the entire engineering and educational communities. Thanks also to Rafael Jimenez for organizing this year’s event!
